English Language Arts

The minimum requirements for a student to attain an Alberta High School Diploma include:

(English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2)

  • Students choosing 10-2 follow the 20-2 and 30-2 course stream through Grade 11 and Grade 12. This course stream is ideal for students entering trades or the work force immediately after high school as well as for those students considering post-secondary studies at institutions offering two and three year diploma programs.
  • Students choosing 10-1 follow the 20-1 and 30-1 course stream through Grade 11 and Grade 12. This stream is ideal for students considering post-secondary studies in most colleges and universities.
  • The Advanced Placement® stream is designed for students who love reading. AP® English students write the same final exams as the “-1” students with the additions of the AP English Language exam (in May of Grade 11) and the AP English Literature exam (May of Grade 12).

It is possible to switch between streams. Students who score 45% or higher in English 10-1 may advance to English 20-2. The same rule applies for students switching from English 20-1 to English 30-2. Students can cross into different streams after successful completion of the same grade level  e.g. 30-2 to 30-1 without needing to complete 20-1. Students may switch into Advanced Placement with teacher and/or Department Head consultation.
